POSITION SUMMARY:  

The SE Research Centre conducts impact-oriented health services research to synthesize, generate, translate, adapt and directly apply scientific evidence in the design, delivery and evaluation of person and family-centred health and social care services.

The primary role of the Senior Research Associate is to lead the development and implementation of health services research projects within the SE Research Centre priority research fields using excellent scientific research and project management skills. The Senior Research Associate also contributes to the strategic direction of the SE Research Centre by monitoring current health system research trends in Canada and internationally and applying this knowledge in an annual review of the SE Research Centre priority research fields. The Senior Research Associate also contributes to leadership within the SE Research Centre through mentorship of Research Associates and Research Assistants and managing internal and external stakeholder relationships.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Represent the SE Research Centre Priority Research Fields (10%)

  • Speak to the SE Research Centre priority research fields both internally and externally with other researchers, academic audiences, clinical and social care specialists/providers, innovators and business leaders and the general public

  • Speak to all projects within the SE Research Centre Research Portfolio both internally and externally with other researchers, academic audiences, clinical and social care specialists/providers, innovators and business leaders and the public

  • Develop project ideas within all SE Research Centre priority research fields

Participate in strong project management of SE Research Centre health services research projects (30%)

  • Carry out the SE Research Centre Project Management roles of ‘Data Collector’, ‘Data Analyst’, ‘Project Coordinator’ or ‘Project Manager’ for knowledge creation, knowledge to action, evaluation or support projects in any of the SE Research Centre priority research fields

   Participate in strong scientific conduct of health services research activities (40%)

  • Develop SE Research Centre research protocols for knowledge creation, knowledge to action and evaluation projects with minimal support

  • Develop SE Research Centre research/grant funding applications with minimal support

  • Collect health services research data using various qualitative and quantitative methods (e.g., survey, focus group, interview, workshop) and introduce new methods to the SE Research Centre where appropriate

  • Analyze health services research data using various qualitative and quantitative methods (e.g., statistical analysis, thematic analysis) and introduce new methods to the SE Research Centre where appropriate

  • Lead the development of various knowledge translation materials and tools (e.g., manuscripts, summaries, posters, slide decks etc.) and implementation of various knowledge translation activities (e.g., workshops, conference seminars etc.)

  • Lead Knowledge Synthesis projects of any type (e.g., systematic reviews, scoping reviews, realist syntheses etc.)

 

Contribute to SE Research Centre Leadership (20%)

  • Participate in cross-functional and cross-departmental committees and teams as an ambassador of the SE Research Centre and health services research scientific methods 

  • Mentor Research Associates/ Research Assistants on project management and scientific methods/ activities

  • Mentor other SE Research Centre team members on specific research methods/skills (at the discretion of the Managing Director)

  • Develop and manage external relationships with collaborators, funders, and other partners with minimal support

Education and Experience

  • PhD in a science of health related discipline with a minimum of 5 years of experience in Health Services Research

Technical Competencies

  • Strong foundation and experience in qualitative and quantitative research methods for application in health services research

  • Strong foundation in knowledge translation and practical and theoretical understanding of relevant outcomes for evaluating social impact

  • A deep understanding of the principal health sectors in Canada including hospital, home and community-based care

  • A deep understanding of health services research

  • Ability to manage a wide variety of projects involving the negotiation and execution of agreements and contracts among multiple researchers, institutions, and partners

  • Ability to understand, integrate, translate and disseminate health services or health systems knowledge developed in a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary context

  • Demonstrated ability in building internal and external relationships and establishing collaborative research with relevant partners

  • Tri-Council Policy Statement (2): Ethical Conduct of Research Involving Humans certificate

Skill Requirements

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills

  • Ability to contribute to leadership within a team under complex research and organizational conditions, and in an environment of multiple conflicting priorities

  • Very strong diplomacy and interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, allocate and deploy human and other resources effectively

  • Demonstrated ability to execute against strategic and operational plans

  • Excellent problem solving, creative thinking and decision-making capacity

  • Ability to provide critical analysis of proposed opportunities from a variety of perspectives

  • Demonstrated commitment to person and family-centred care

  • This role is a 1 year contract
