Position Summary:
SE Health is seeking an experienced Manager of Enterprise Data and Business Intelligence to lead our critical transformation from legacy on-premises systems (SQL Server 2009, SSIS, SSRS, SSAS, MicroStrategy) to a modern cloud-based Microsoft ecosystem (Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, Azure ML). This pivotal role combines people leadership, technical architecture, and transformation management to ensure business continuity while driving innovation.
The successful candidate will manage a team of 5 or 6 data professionals, maintaining current operations while orchestrating their transition to cloud technologies. This position requires a unique blend of legacy system knowledge, modern cloud expertise, and exceptional change management skills to bridge the gap between where we are and where we need to be. Please note that this is a hands-on role; it requires in-depth involvement in data modelling, cloud solutioning, BI architecture and design, as well as peer-reviewing code and ensuring accuracy, and compliance with best practices.
Location: Hybrid (Markham office) with occasional on-site requirements as needed
Key Accountabilities:
1. Operational Excellence & Team Leadership (30%)
- Manage and mentor a team of BI and data developers and analysts currently supporting legacy systems
- Ensure business continuity by maintaining current MicroStrategy, SSIS, and SQL Server operations (among other legacy technologies)
- Oversee ticket resolution, SLAs, and operational metrics – take active role in development and support in addressing tickets and production issues
- Balance team workload between maintenance and transformation activities
- Address production issues on an ad-hoc basis. Sometimes production issues occur outside of regular hours
- Peer-review development efforts, coding and other artifacts to ensure compliance and adherence to best practices. Mentor team as required.
- Conduct performance reviews and career development planning
2. Transformation Leadership & Skills Development (20%)
- Act as Subject Matter Expert on cloud technologies including Azure services, Azure ML, API data integrations, Azure SQL Managed Instances, and Azure Data Factory
- Assess current team capabilities against cloud transformation requirements
- Design and implement comprehensive Azure/Power BI training programs
- Create individual development plans transitioning team members from legacy to modern skills
- The individual is expected to mentor the team in using cloud solutions and technologies. Therefore, the incumbent must have adequate knowledge of the future-state technologies (such as Power BI, Microsoft Fabric Stack, Azure Data Factory, etc.)
- Build a culture of continuous learning and cloud-first thinking
3. Project Management & Stakeholder Engagement (20%)
- Lead requirements gathering sessions with business stakeholders
- Manage multiple concurrent projects across legacy maintenance and new cloud initiatives
- Coordinate with external vendors and implementation partners
- Provide regular status updates to leadership
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation
4. Technical Architecture & Strategy (20%)
- Design transition architectures that bridge legacy and modern systems
- Define data architecture standards for Microsoft Fabric implementation
- Guide migration strategies from SSIS to Azure Data Factory
- Establish best practices for Power BI adoption and governance
- Review and approve technical designs for both current and future state
5. Data Governance & Quality Leadership (10%)
- Champion data governance initiatives including MDM strategy
- Collaborate on Microsoft Purview implementation
- Establish data quality standards and monitoring frameworks
Qualifications:
5+ years of experience in data sphere (developer, analyst, scientist, ETL, or analytics project manager); at least 1+ in team lead or supervision or management experience.
Technical Expertise
- Legacy Systems
- (Must Have): Deep understanding of SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS, SSAS, OLAP concepts, and on-prem solutions
- (Nice to have): MicroStrategy on-prem
- Modern Cloud (Must Have): Hands-on experience with Azure Data Platform, Power BI or Microsoft Fabric, and Azure Data Factory among other Azure services
- Architecture: Proven experience designing enterprise data architectures
- Migration Experience: Led at least one major BI platform transformation
- Specialized Knowledge: Data warehousing, Data Engineering, Data Modelling
- Nice to have: Azure ML, Machine Learning, Data Science, Python
Leadership & Soft Skills
- 1+ years of leading or managing technical teams
- Demonstrated ability to upskill teams through technology transitions
- Exceptional communication skills to translate between technical and business stakeholders
- Strong project management capabilities
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent
- Relevant Microsoft certifications (Azure Data Engineer, Power BI) are strongly preferred
