JOB SUMMARY
The Medical Director provides medical governance, clinical oversight, and professional leadership for medical services within the Type A Continuing Care Home(s). The role ensures medical services are delivered in accordance with:
- The Continuing Care Health Service Standards
- Applicable provincial legislation and regulatory requirements
- Professional standards of practice
- SE Health’s mission, values, and philosophy of care
The Medical Director supports the delivery of high-quality, resident-centered care that aligns with both provincial health standards and the organizational vision for safe, ethical, and evidence-informed continuing care services.
The Medical Director collaborates with the Director of Care and community leadership to ensure clinical excellence, system alignment, and continuous quality improvement
We are hiring an Independent Contractor for this role.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Medical Governance & Oversight
- Provide oversight of medical services delivered by Attending Physicians and Nurse Practitioners to ensure alignment with legislative, regulatory, and professional standards.
- Advise on policies, procedures, and processes related to the provision of prescribed health goods and services.
- Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of medical service delivery models.
- Provide clinical guidance to leadership when concerns arise regarding the quality or appropriateness of medical care provided within the community.
2. Clinical Leadership & Quality Improvement
In collaboration with the Director of Care:
- Lead periodic review of medical service performance and quality indicators.
- Provide guidance to ensure the quality of medical care aligns not only with provincial health standards and regulatory expectations, but also with SE Health’s philosophy of person-centered, relationship-based care.
- Prepare an annual medical services summary report identifying strengths, risks, and improvement opportunities.
- Maintain awareness of emerging issues within the Seniors Living sector and incorporate relevant best practices.
3. Physician Coordination & Coverage
- Ensure each resident is under the care of an Attending Physician or Nurse Practitioner.
- Confirm appropriate 24/7 on-call medical coverage arrangements are in place.
· Provide reasonable action to ensure each resident has a Primary care provider.
- Facilitate professional collaboration among Attending Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and clinical leadership.
4. Regulatory & Compliance Support
- Participate in compliance reviews, inspections, and investigations related to medical services, as appropriate.
- Provide medical consultation during coroner inquiries or regulatory reviews when required.
- Support documentation and reporting requirements associated with medical service provision.
5. Meetings & Engagement
The Medical Director, or designate, will:
- Participate in the Resident Safety and Quality Committee.
- Meet with clinical leadership at least quarterly to review medical service provision.
- Attend the community regularly (in person or virtually) to maintain oversight of medical services.
6. Continuity & Emergency Planning
- Collaborate in emergency preparedness and business continuity planning.
- Designate a qualified physician to act in their absence and notify leadership accordingly.
7. Strategic & Organizational Alignment
- Collaborate with organizational leadership to ensure medical services support the evolving strategic direction of SE Health Seniors Living.
- Provide medical input into model-of-care discussions where appropriate, recognizing that different communities operate under distinct care models.
- Participate in dialogue regarding future clinical direction to ensure shared understanding between the Medical Director and SE Health leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Licensed physician in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
- Completion of CPSA Medical Director Training.
- Experience in geriatrics, continuing care, or long-term care preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of medical governance within congregate care environments.
